One drummer needed and one roommate needed
Greetings fellow gothic philly friends.
So I live in East Falls, PA (It is near Fairmount and Manayunk) and live in a house with two band members. We have a unique goth/rock sound that includes vocals with distortion and dark themes, viola, bass guitar and piano/synthesizer.
One: We are in need of more band members, preferably percussion/drums. Drum set, timpani, electric drums, conga, box drum all acceptable. Other percussionists and instruments are welcome to apply. Maybe violin, guitar, saxophone etc...
Two: We are in need of a fourth housemate to help with the rent. You would have your own private bedroom on the second floor for about $400 a month (including utilities and internet) but you would have to be a non-smoker, a pet lover, not eat red meat and preferably be a vegetarian, and OK with lots of music being played, including one night of band practice a week, and daily or nightly classical piano practice. And be LGBT (gay, lesbian, bi, or trans) or open and accepting of those who are.
Please contact me with any questions.

Free tickets to Dracula's Ball / Chance to meet Anne Rice!
We're very pleased to begin the new year by announcing two fantastic promotions for the February 4th Dracula's Ball that we think you will be very excited about.
The first is that we have a decent (but limited) supply of *free* tickets for the upcoming Dracula's Ball event. To get one, all you have to do is pre-order a copy of Anne Rice's new book, The Wolf Gift, from IsoTank. Your name will be placed on a special Wolf Gift VIP list, and you'll receive FREE admission to the Ball! Be sure to take advantage of this special offer while it lasts. When IsoTank runs out of books, they'll be out of free tickets. Here's the link to pre-order the book:http://www2.mailordercentral.com/isotank/prodinfo.asp?number=39425-0
Feel free to pass that information on to other friends of your who are Anne Rice fans. It'll be the perfect chance for you to get them out to Dracula's Ball!
As if that wasn't wonderful enough, Anne and her publisher have graciously offered us five door prizes to give away in a special midnight drawing. Each of the five winners will receive a copy of The Wolf Gift, which Anne will autograph for them IN PERSON when she is in Philadelphia a few weeks later. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to win a chance to meet Anne Rice in person!
The next Dracula's Ball event takes place on Saturday, February 4th, 2012. Doors open at 9pm and our event ends at 2am. Tickets are $16 and are on sale now through Ticketmaster (online and in person), Digital Ferret (in person) and IsoTank (online, free shipping for 5 or more tickets). We'll keep our website and Facebook page updated with ticket information. Here's the link to order tickets from IsoTank:http://www2.mailordercentral.com/isotank/prodinfo.asp?number=39424-0
When we met Anne Rice last month to discuss upcoming projects (and to thank her for sending us the wonderful dress we displayed at the last Dracula's Ball), she was very excited to tell us about her upcoming book, The Wolf Gift. A brand new venture into the realm of dark fiction, The Wolf Gift is a modern and passionate exploration of the world of werewolves.
Pre-order this book from IsoTank and receive a free ticket to the upcoming Dracula's Ball event in Philadelphia on February 4th, 2012. Your name will be on a special "Wolf Gift" VIP list at the venue and you'll receive FREE admission to the Ball!
At Dracula's Ball, there will be a drawing for door prizes at midnight. Five winners will receive a free copy of The Wolf Gift, which will be autographed to the winner by Anne Rice in person. The autograph will be signed in Philadelphia in mid-February.
***Artists Appearing at Dracula's Ball, February 4th, 2012***
As usual, we'll have 3 DJs spinning in 3 separate rooms, so you'll always be able to find a solid groove you can dance to. DJ Spider returns from North Carolina, DJ Miko LeStrange represents DC, and DJ Zircon comes from nearby New Jersey. Now let's meet our live bands:
CRYO-MANCER: Cryomancer is the product of the talents of frontman/guitarist Kryss Oroborus and bassist/vocalist Sparks. Completely restructured and relocated in 2009 the band has changed their sound drastically from electro to a unique hard edged, guitar driven industrial metal/coldwave style.
STAGE TIME - 10:35pm
THE DROWNING SEASON: Putting the rock back in goth-rock, this Baltimore band has been laying down sonic napalm on the dancefloor for nearly twelve years. Major influences include The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission (UK) and Fields of the Nephilim. This is their second appearance at Dracula's Ball.
STAGE TIME - 12:05am
This Ball takes place in our favorite location, Shampoo Nightclub, at 7th & Willow Streets in Philadelphia, PA (Mapquest and Google Maps info can be found on our website). As always, the Ball is open to all ages, but you must be 21+ with proper photo ID to drink. Shampoo has an on-site free parking lot but it fills up very quickly for the Ball. Check our map of available nearby parking on Facebook if you're arriving late. Personal photo cameras are welcome. Large professional camera rigs with unpleasant flash bulbs are not. Video cameras are not allowed.
This is our first Ball of 2012 and we're very excited to be offering you free tickets and personal autographs, courtesy of Anne Rice and her publisher. Join us on February 4th and you may win a chance to meet the Queen of Vampires herself!

THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOITH – the debut novel from Mick MercerHaving written about Goth since it began, with a past in fanzines (starting in 1976) and music journalism, I guess it isn’t surprising what lies at the heart of my first novel, THE OLD LADY WHO INVENTED GOTH, but this is not a typical book. For a start the first edition is illustrated in a new way for a novel, while the story is a prequel to what we know and understand. 100 years ago Hermione M. Lee wanted what we have now, but it simply didn’t exist. As she was just fourteen, and a surprisingly foul-mouthed child, with The Great War brewing quietly in the distance there wasn’t a great deal she could do about it, or anything. That never stopped her trying, from the moment she found creativity crackling beneath her fingernails and in a busy life Hermione was rarely inert for long. A champion of darkness, and yet a vanquisher of gloom, Hermione M. Lee is a Gothic blueprint in action, living a life steeped in sin and intrigue, but justifiably so.( Read more...Collapse )http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-old-lady-who-invented-goth/16128634

Upcoming Dorian's Parlor Event
is a celebration of the Steampunk aesthetic, which blends history with the future and adds a healthy dose of what might have been. Patrons dance, sip cocktails, enjoy hors d'oeuvres and partake in a one-of-its-kind lineup of bands, DJs, dancers and high fashion from the foremost neo-vintage designers. Dorian’s Parlor is fast becoming a household name for those who love Steampunk and all things neo-vintage.
The June lineup features the return of the delightful Psyche Corporation, which is “one part cyberpunk trip-hop darkwave music, one part robotics exhibition, one part dreamscape art.” The much-loved White Elephant Burlesque Society returns as well with a gypsy cabaret full of vaudevillian burlesque Dorian’s Parlor also features New-England based band Jaggery, an art-rock collective which weaves instruments such as harp, viola, piano, contrabass, and drum kit with other-worldly vocal stylings. For something a little out of the ordinary, check out Walter Sickert and The ARmy of BRoken TOys, described as “a Dada-esque circus carnival run amuck.” This month’s fashion show will feature the delightful designs of Jeximé, and Tsirkus Fotografika’s RA Friedman will present the project’s most memorable and intriguing portraits and discuss his unorthodox photo methodology.
The next 21+ event will be held Saturday, June 4th, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., in the Ormandy Ballroom of the DoubleTree Hotel, on the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Philadelphia. Admission is $25, and includes a drink ticket and hors d’oeuvres.

Want a table? May 22nd ...
On May 22nd, there's a Punk Rock Flea Market in Philly ... the club across the street (Starlight .aka. Club Polaris 452-472 N 9th St, 19123) is opening during the flea market so the buyers can use their bathroom, ATM, and get food. The owner is letting me put up a table in their place (the flea market tables are sold out) and he said I could rent 29 more tables in the club to other vendors ... contact me, if you want a table.

The Colber Report @ Dracula's Ball 4/23
As mentioned in a previous note, The Colbert Report has asked for permission to film at the upcoming Dracula's Ball. After carefully considering all of the comments posted on our previous note, we have decided to grant the show permission to film in a limited capacity at the event. Since a few of you expressed concerns, we wanted to take this opportunity to explain exactly what is going to be happening.
The film crew will be looking for volunteers who would like to be interviewed between 8pm and 10pm. Since our doors do not open until 9pm, the first hour of interviews will be conducted with volunteers who are waiting in line. From 9pm-10pm, the crew plans to find volunteers inside at the event. If you do not want to participate, you are under no obligation to do so. Only people who want to participate will be interviewed. If you do choose to be interviewed, bear in mind that this is not a serious documentary, it is a comedy sketch. In order to elicit funny answers from you, you will almost certainly be presented with a few silly questions ("What time is the virgin sacrifice?") that come out of left field. You can give answers that are serious, humorous, or you can choose not to answer at all. Whatever you do, have a good time with it and enjoy it.
The crew will also be taking some crowd shots of the dancefloors and other common areas of the club. This process should not last long and there is only one camera involved.
We have been very fortunate to work with a number of excellent documentary productions in the past, but we are well aware that the media is not always kind to subcultures. When we were initially approached by The Colbert Report, we declined their request to film because we were concerned that their segment might make jokes about our event, our patrons, or our scene, all of which are dearly important to us. After several conversations and a meeting with the show's producers, we accepted their assurance that the segment wanted to joke with us and not about us. Your feedback was overwhelmingly positive and many of you expressed the sentiment that it was important to show that we have a good sense of humor and can laugh about ourselves.
Of course, we never know how any film segment is really going to turn out until we see it on TV. There is always the risk that the final product will not turn out quite as planned. Our hope and belief is that we will wind up with a story that shows a human and humorous side to our subculture. We anticipate that it will be funny, and we'll be happy to be in on the joke.
In conclusion, we would again like to point out that there is no obligation to participate in this filming. We have an amazing lineup for you and there will be plenty for you to do. Feel free to forget about the film and enjoy the show. Current Mood: pleased
